Oblivious

I drive past this building daily and I have no idea its history or what it currently holds. It is funny, (and a bit sad), how you can be oblivious to your daily surroundings.

Prepare to Stop

This sign tells drivers that when the overhead lights are flashing the traffic lights at the upcoming intersection will be turning red and you will then have enough time to slow down to a stop.

I had a slightly different, off-the-cuff, type thought when I saw this sign. What do you think?

Winter Driving...

I took this photo yesterday on my drive home at lunch. Winter is here and the roads are slippery; I really do not like winter driving. These are the days that I dream of moving to warmer climates.

Bringing home the Grey Cup

Today was the Grey Cup parade. (This photo is courtesy of a co-worker; as the parade started 15 mins early and I missed it). Despite the -35 degree wind-chill factor, fans were out in full force to get a chance to see the team paraded down Albert Street with the Grey Cup.

I Love Regina

The "I Love Regina" sign outside of City Hall. Below is an excerpt from the website:

"I Love Regina” is not just a slogan, but an emotion that drives all Reginans. It represents the heart citizens wear on their sleeves everyday, sleeves rolled up in a constant and collective effort to make Regina the best it can be. It was an idea born in the Mayors Office but has taken on a life of its own....“I Love Regina” was officially born on June 28, 2002.

In the Name of Art

In the past couple of weeks, I have noticed people sitting in the downtown area sketching and drawing. There must be an art class near by that releases the artists outside to get inspired. Now that the weather has turned and it is getting colder, these artists are now outside wearing parkas and gloves. Only in Saskatchewan - lol. The sacrafice they make is all in the name of art.

American Prices

The Canadian dollar is currently worth more than the American dollar. To reflect this, one of the local bookstores in the city is selling "American Books at American Prices". As a side note, in Canada, the Canadian price on books is always higher than the American price. Do other countries have two or more different price tags on books; one per country?

Creation of Turtle Island

Life-sized alabaster and bronze sculpture by Cree artist, Lloyd Pinay. The sculpture incorporates characters and elements from the many different versions of the Wi sa ke cahk and the Creation of Turtle Island story.

The Trickster is a principal character in many First Nations' stories. He is known as Wi sa ke cahk to the Cree, Nanabush to the Saulteaux, Inktome to the Dakota and Nakota, and Sagija'k to the Dene.

After causing a great flood, Wi sa ke cahk was left alone with three animals a beaver, an otter, and a muskrat. He sent the first two beneath the waters to retrieve a piece of earth, but they failed. The muskrat succeeded, but died in the attempt. Wi sa ke cahk used the bit of earth to restore the land and its inhabitants. Grandmother Turtle plays an important role, for she forms the basis for the new earth.

Nov 11th - Remembrance Day

In November, Canadians wear scarlet poppies to pay tribute to those who have died in war and military operations. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the time the Armistice of World War I was signed in 1918 – people across the country are asked to observe two minutes of silence to remember those servicemen and women who have sacrificed their lives.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- John McCrae, 1915

The Soldiers' Plot

The Soldiers' Plot, also known as the Soldiers' Cemetery, is flanked by two field guns, which were captured from the German Army in World War I. Tombstones in this plot are arranged symmetrically and feature the name, rank, serial number, unit, age, and date of death of each soldier. The grounds around the Soldiers' Plot are immaculately landscaped and serve as one of the most impressive military burial grounds in Canada.
